The Setting
A Crooked Sixpence is book 2 in the Jorinde Schuiters Mysteries. This fun cozy mystery series is set in a world (very) loosely based on the Dutch Golden Age, with the addition of weatherworking magic, a skill possessed by some people which allows them to control the elements: air, water, fire and earth. Weatherworking in this world in largely used for practical tasks: it creates wind to drive sailing ships and power windmills and calls up rain clouds to ensures crops get enough water. But, of course, it has other uses….

Another excellent mystery! The main character, Jorinde, is a shrewd business woman making her way in a man’s world. She finds herself caught up in a complex web of mystery, intrigue, and revenge. She must use all of her powers of observation, her business acumen, and her ability to look past first impressions of people to untangle this web. Her reputation, her business, and even her life, are on the line. Jorinde is a well developed unique character. The plot and characters in this book are interesting and allow the reader to be swept into Jorinde’s world. There is enough magic in this world to add more layers to the story without detracting from the realism and plot. .
